The Equity’s new AI Policy

At The Equity, we’ve always believed that being a local newspaper is about the trust we build with you, our neighbors in the Pontiac.

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) starts to change how information is created, many big publishers are only just beginning to wake up to its potential – and its problems. We didn’t want to wait. Even as a small, local publisher, we believe in being leaders in our field. That’s why we’ve already put a formal AI Policy in place – one of the first for a news organization in Canada.

Why a policy matters

This policy is a promise to our readers. It’s our way of making sure that as technology evolves, our standards don’t. We want you to know exactly when a computer is helping us and, more importantly, when it isn’t.

The core of our commitment is simple:

  • Human-First Journalism: All our news stories and photos are created by real people who live and work right here.
  • Total Transparency: If we use AI for anything more than simple proofreading or research, we’ll tell you right at the top of the page.
  • No Shortcuts on Truth: We will never use AI to create fake quotes, sources, or “photos” that didn’t happen in real life.

Leading the way

By setting these rules now, we’re ensuring that The Equity remains a source you can rely on for the next 140 years. We’re proud to be ahead of the curve, proving that you don’t have to be a global media giant to lead with integrity.

We invite you to read the full policy to see how we’re balancing new tools with old-fashioned local reporting.
